The programme, which began in 1989 at the Graduate School of Biotechnology in Strasbourg -École Supérieure de Biotechnologie de Strasbourg (ESBS)-, is trinational in many respects: multilingual teaching is offered by the universities of Freiburg, Basel, Strasbourg and Karlsruhe. At the end of their course the German, French and Swiss students graduate with an Engineering Master's degree which is recognised in the three countries.

Since 2001, the above-mentioned graduate school, which is closely linked to both the world of research and that of business, has enabled the development of innovative new companies thanks to its 'Bio-Incubator' facility.
