Experimenting with Sustainability in the city?
What opportunities do real-world experiments offer for testing solutions to sustainable development in cities, and how can they contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)? In early July, around a dozen students from the Eucor Universities of Basel, Karlsruhe, Freiburg and Strasbourg gathered for a hybrid block course at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The course aimed to explore urban environments through the lens of the SDGs and to develop ideas for real-world experiments based on these insights.

Trinational Fall School: ‘Transdisciplinary approaches to the sustainability of water use: case studies from the Upper Rhine’
From 7 to 11 October 2024, the University of Strasbourg will host a Fall School on sustainability in the management of inland waters in the Upper Rhine region. It will offer 20 doctoral and master's students from various disciplines the opportunity to interactively learn transdisciplinary methods for the transfer of knowledge from research to the practice of water management and to test them on the basis of three case studies in the Upper Rhine region.
Hybrid Seminar: Developing real-world experiments to foster sustainability transformations in cities
This course explores how we can use the SDGs as a tool for analyzing developments in our own city: Where does the relevance of certain SDGs become particularly tangible? Where can the SDGs be used to observe developments towards sustainability, where can grievances be revealed? Where and in what way can each and every individual take action to implement the SDGs? These insights will be the basis for designing starting points for concrete real-world experiments to explore and test out solution pathways for specific challenges in the context of the SDGs.

Sustainable Entrepreneurship: Focusing on Sustainable Business Solutions
At the beginning of April 2024, students from Eucor and EPICUR universities traveled to Vienna for the five-day EPICUR Spring School “Sustainable Entrepreneurship” at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU). Harry Bonetti, who studies Spanish and Sports Science at the University of Basel, summarizes his impressions as a participant of the Spring School: “The Spring School week was a unique experience where students from all over the world came together to develop solutions to problems for three existing sustainable companies. It was also, to a certain extent, a crash course in the world of entrepreneurship, which led us to develop an idea and a common thread for our own sustainable start-ups that can now be pursued further.”
