Annual EUCOR English Trinational MA and PhD Conference 2022

From April 8-9, 2022, the 16th Annual EUCOR English Trinational MA and PhD Conference took place. After last year’s event – having been postponed by a year already – was organized fully online due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s conference saw the much-anticipated return to a proper on-site format. Basel’s Department of English had the pleasure to host this year’s event. This setup gave the participating master and PhD students from Basel, Freiburg, Strasbourg, and Mulhouse the opportunity both to present their research to a larger audience in the framework of a competitive conference and to continue discussions in a more informal setting.

Importantly, students not only benefitted from faculty feedback and expertise, but also gained insight into the involved institutions’ different disciplinary orientations and specific research and teaching practices. Accordingly, the contributions to the conference were not limited to the disciplinary core competences of literary studies and linguistics, but also engaged with and drew on questions pertaining to a plethora of neighboring disciplines such as history, politics, photography, food studies, film, and media studies. Not least because of this diversity of research interests, the lively exchange of ideas with students from the three collaborating countries constituted a genuine asset for participating students. The conference concluded with an engaging and, given current world-political events, unfortunately timely talk by Prof. Gwen Cressman (Strasbourg) entitled “Borders beyond Nationalist Narratives in North-American Photography.” During a joint dinner, all participants came together in a convivial atmosphere.
