Hans-Jochen Schiewer has been confirmed as President of Eucor – The European Campus

The reigning president of Eucor – The European Campus, Prof. Dr. Hans-Jochen Schiewer, rector at the University of Freiburg, has been confirmed in his office through the meeting of the heads of the member universities of Eucor – The European Campus in Basel. Prof. Dr. Andrea Schenker-Wicki, rector at the University of Basel, was also reelected as deputy. The term begins on May 11, 2019 and runs for three years in accordance with the statutes. Janosch Nieden will remain director of the network’s office for an additional three years.

Schiewer has been President of Eucor – The European Campus since May 2016. In his second term in office, he will be particularly committed to the implementation of the jointly agreed strategic plan: “The rapid developments in recent years and the ensuing political support have given us a lot of momentum, which we will now implement in joint projects. Not only the joint strategy for the period up to 2023 will serve to strengthen our partnership, but also the success of our network in European research funding. In my second term in office, we want to appoint joint professorships in the profile areas and introduce a cross-border semester ticket for students, among other things.”

After his studies, doctorate and habilitation at the Freie Universität Berlin with intermediate stops in Oxford, England, and Göttingen, Hans-Jochen Schiewer accepted a professorship for Medieval German Literature and Language at the University of Freiburg in 2003. There he first became vice rector and full-time vice-president for academic affairs and then in 2008 rector. He has been Chairman of German U15 since September 2016. Schiewer has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Latvia, Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques (Order of the Academic Palms) and an honorary doctorate from the University of Strasbourg.
