The aim of the “SuMo-Rhine – Promotion of Sustainable Mobility in the Upper Rhine Region” project, launched on 1 July 2018, is to support communities in the Upper Rhine region in setting up and expanding cross-border sustainable transport systems. The project partners want to set up a new “decision support system”. This system thus forms a cornerstone for the mobility turnaround in border regions. Using a web application, indicators for sustainable mobility can be made accessible to a broad public. This will enable decision-makers from politics and industry to identify potentials for improving transport services with low environmental impact and for increasing the market share of alternative modes of transport much more precisely than before. Modern multi-modal transport concepts with large proportions of non-motorised routes or electric mobility are seen here as fundamental building blocks of a sustainable transport concept. In addition to the positive environmental effects, this can also cause considerable economic and health side effects for the population.
The project is coordinated by the German-French Institute for Environmental Research (DFIU) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The consortium of the project consists of the following institutions: Institute of Economics (KIT), Centre for Renewable Energies (University of Freiburg), Institute of Environmental Sciences (University of Koblenz-Landau), Laboratoire Image, Ville, Environment (University of Strasbourg and Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), Institut de Recherche en Informatique, Mathématiques, Automatique et Signal (University of Haute-Alsace), Chair “Mobilités Métropolitaines Innovantes” (École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Strasbourg); City of Lörrach. The European Union is supporting the project with a total of 1.36 million euros from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
