COMETH
COMETH (Conceptions of Medieval Thought) is a trinational research group that has existed since 2014 and brings together medievalists from the universities of Freiburg, Basel, Strasbourg, active in the fields of medieval, Latin and Arabic philosophy, medieval theology and of the first modernity, and the history of their modern reception.
The group studies the conceptions of medieval thought as well as from the point of view of historical and historiographical methodologies. COMETH studies the medieval conceptions of language and the method identified as conceptual devices, already used by medieval thinkers, but also by modern historians to distinguish “medieval” thinking from its historical context. From Arabic philosophy and linguistics from the Middle Ages to the beginning of modern historiography, COMETH aims to explore the strategies of self-representation and legitimisation of intellectual traditions. As these traditions have shaped the modern system of science and that of modern society, COMETH contributes to the current debate on the role and function of the human sciences.
The members of the COMETH group are: Gianluca Briguglia, Catherine König-Pralong, Ueli Zahnd, Nadja Germann and Isabel Iribarren.
