Through its European Identities focus area, Eucor explicitly builds on the humanist educational tradition and the shared history of the Upper Rhine region, which is closely linked to the European values of today: freedom, democracy, peace and human rights. Owing to the immense diversity of disciplines and the resulting wide-ranging expertise in the humanities and social sciences, the European Campus can draw on broad potential in such a focus area. Within Eucor's focus areas, “Research, Teaching and Transfer Hubs” (RTTHs) are being established, which is why they are structured into research, teaching and transfer.
European Identities in Research
Cross-border networks
- The Collegium Beatus Rhenanus (CBR) is a research and teaching consortium devoted to the study of antiquity and its afterlives. The universities of Basel, Freiburg, Haute-Alsace and Strasbourg are involved.
- The English studies departments of the Eucor universities can look back on 30 years of collaboration within Eucor English. Cooperation takes place in both teaching and research. The universities of Basel, Freiburg, Haute-Alsace and Strasbourg are involved.
- In the Eucor Network in Scandinavian Studies, the universities of Basel, Freiburg and Strasbourg cooperate in research and teaching, and also integrate partner institutions outside the Eucor area.
Seed Money projects
- The project Human Remains in University Collections – Comparison and Entanglements (2025–2027) focuses on ethically sensitive collections of human remains at universities. These collections have global and therefore also colonial origins, and present universities on both sides of the border with similar challenges. The universities of Basel, Freiburg and Strasbourg are involved.
Eucor has determined several thematic areas of cooperation to utilise joint strengths and pool competencies. These focus areas were defined after analysing potentials, locations and existing collaborative projects. Based on specific themes, the member universities establish consortia that are capable of conducting internationally visible and competitive research, while maintaining close ties to teaching and innovation. European Identities in Teaching
Joint degree programmes
- The Bachelor’s degree programme in German Studies from a Franco-German perspective, with a double degree from the universities of Freiburg and Strasbourg, teaches German studies from both an insider’s and a (French) outsider’s perspective.
Mobility recommendations
- The following degree programmes have mobility recommendations for selected courses at other Eucor universities: English Departments, Bachelor of Arts Scandinavian Studies, Bachelor of Arts in Media and Cultural Studies and Master of Arts in Media and Cultural Research, Master Cultural Anthropology, Master Interreligious Studies.
Cross-border networks
- The networks in Scandinavian Studies, English Studies and Ancient Studies (all three see above) cooperate not only in research but also in teaching.
Seed Money projects
- The Eucor Master in Scandinavian Studies project (2024–2025) serves to establish a joint Master’s degree programme. The universities of Basel, Freiburg and Strasbourg are involved.
- The Eucor - Languages project (2020–2024) is based on the Eucor English network and enabled increased cooperation between the English departments of the universities of Basel, Freiburg, Haute-Alsace and Strasbourg.
- In the project Bachelor Cross-border European Studies in a Global World (2020–2021), the introduction of a new Bachelor’s degree programme between the universities of Basel, Freiburg and Strasbourg was planned.
