ZUNAMI

The Rhine, one of Europe's most important rivers, is both a source of drinking water and a major transport route for microplastics into the oceans. These tiny particles remain in the environment, accumulate in organisms and can potentially affect human health. Currently, water monitoring is based on manual sampling and laboratory analysis, which are cost-intensive and time-consuming.

ZUNAMI solves this problem with an automated instrument that can analyse water samples on site. It combines advanced sample preparation, automation through microfluidics and electrical particle detection through microporous sensor technology in a compact system. After being tested in the laboratory, the technology will be tested on real Rhine samples to ensure that the results are comparable with established reference methods.

For water operators and regulatory authorities, ZUNAMI promises faster information and earlier warnings to protect both ecosystems and human health.
